Need a Hand Part 2

This seventh grader's result for the hand project is coming along well. In this project the students drew their hand with pencil and then used the lines we thought about from the warm up to create the background. This point of the project really emphasizes the lines. Next class they will be adding color to their work.

A Neighborhood

I loved this picture not only for the use of color but for the demonstration of mastery for making the three-dimensional house. This is another first grade result. This student used their imagination for creating the colors within the composition and also made great use of their 20 minutes to create this splendid art work.

Lines for a House

This might be a little difficult to see but the details in this picture from a first grader I think make up for it. The students are practicing line drawings of houses to illustrate their understanding of line. We did a directed drawing lesson for the basics of drawing the house ( the 3-D pentagon). Then they were able to use any details to make their picture more unique.

Floral Observation

Students were doing flowers last week and I wanted to share a third grade result where the student asked to work two 20 minute sessions on the assignment instead of one. This was done entirely with crayon as the student was looking at one of the flower vases sitting in the classroom.

Observational drawing

An observational drawing by a fifth grader of an artifical flower pot I have in my art room. 20 minutes.

Need a Hand?

Students were practicing contour drawing of hands today in their sketchbooks so that next week they can work on it on art paper. This lesson was focusing on the art element known as line. Before they started, I demonstrated how to I draw hands and also explained that it's easier to draw the non-writing hand.  This is a sixth grader's result.

Watering Flowers

I wanted to share this 3 grade result with the flowers. This student chose to make this picture more surreal by having someone water the flowers. With 20 minutes this student was able to accomplish a lot.

A fourth grade drawing of flowers. The students had a set of flowers in front of them with only 20 minutes to work. This is one of the exemplary results. We are working towards more realism. I did give them the option to add random things but this student chose to solely focus on the flowers and vase.

Another Free Draw

Another result from the free draw activity--This is a first grader's house and elephary (a fairy mixed with an elephant, which was thought up by a third grader last year). The students practiced both last year.

First Day Free Draw

The students started the new year with free drawing (drawing something of their choice). This student among a couple others in third grade drew a rendition of Keith Haring's people displayed on the classroom wall. Keith Haring's work is a favorite in the art classroom due to his use of active geometric figures.
